Extra Credit For Final

1. Explain what happened to the man that was killed by the subway and how the photographer was able to take the photo.
The man that was killed by the subway was first pushed into the tracks by an unknown person. The photographer was able to take the photo because he had one in his bag with him.

2. Why did the photographer say he took the photo?
The photographer said he took the photo because he wanted to alert the subway driver with the flash on his camera.
3. Do you think the photographer should have taken the photo?
I think he should of because from the point of view in the camera,he wouldn't of been able to physically help the man.
4. Do you think the photographer did the best thing he could have done in this situation? Why or why not?
I'm not sure how much time the photographer had after the man was pushed but if it all happened really fast then I do think that this was the best thing he could of done at least to tell people how he died and to other his death.
5. Do you agree or disagree with the decision to run the photo on the front page of the New York Post? Explain why or why not.
This is where I don't really agree with it,posting a picture of somebody about to for sure die.I just think its wrong, and I bet his family was probably angered by this.Showing the whole city of New York of how a man died because someone pushed him and nobody helped him.
6. What is more important to a photojournalist, capturing images of life as it happens or stopping bad things from happening?
Why or why not?
Well to a photojournalist it is more important to most of them to capture the images as life happens because it is what they paid to go to college for and what they get paid to do as they have family's and mouths to feed. There are a few such as John Freeman who speaks about how he instructs his students to help first and take pictures second.

7. Do you think it is ever ethically acceptable for a photographer to involve himself/herself in a situation that he or she photographs? Explain why or why not.
i do think that it is sometimes acceptable for a photographer to involve himself in a situation that he or she photographs.During hurricanes many photojournalists are sent to the areas to capture video or pictures of the destruction, some try to help the people there.Instead of taking a picture of somebody drowning, your supposed to jump in the water and help them.

8. Should photojournalists always avoid influencing events as they happen? Explain your answer.
I do think photojournalists should avoid influencing events as they happen because it changes how people act,if somebody sees you while they take their photo, they change how they look and what they are doing. You won't get their actual look and how they actually act.

9. After reading the responses from the professional photographers, what stands out as the most appropriate response for a photographer to this situation. Most of the photographers said if they have a chance to help, they help the person first,if chance is given, take a picture second. As one of the photographer said," I am a human first, photographer second."

Fashion

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully) Her eyes were moved up,she was made thinner,All of her facial properties were changed in some way.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not? I think it is ethically acceptable to change this person's appearance in this case because it is for an advertisement and nothing more.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation? Yes,in the case of a drivers license, they wont look the same.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?Changes like the brightness and small stuff like that, changes to the person's actual look that are to drastic aren't OK in a lot of cases.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
The difference in fashion photography and photojournalism is that in fashion photography they do it so it gets your eye so they can sell something to you while in photo j its just for fun.
6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each? Each type of photography influences the other to do different things and the bars change for whats ethical and whats not.

Lytro Warm-Up

1. What did you see happen when you clicked on the photo? I saw a bunch of pictures with good lighting and they had great quality.
2. How does this new camera work? This "new camera" takes great pictures at close up.
3. What do you think a photographer would have to know about to take this kind of photo (remember its a point-and-shoot, so its full manual mode, what do you need to know about) The photographer would have to know how to have the right zoom and for the pictures not to come out blurry.
4. Is it worth the money? I guess it is worth the money as the camera takes some really cool pictures and the design is very cool.

Rules of Photography Part II

Rule of Thirds

Balancing Elements

Leading Lines

Symmetry and Patterns

Viewpoint

Background
Depth

Framing
Cropping

Experimentation

Self Portrait Part II

Best Tips:
-Use a tripod. Seriously. While it’s possible to get good photos while you’re hanging on to your camera at arms-length, it’s a lot easier if you’ve got the freedom to move around a bit.
-Get Closer. The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects. In some cases this means that the center of interest—the subject—is just a speck, too small to have any impact.
-Memorabilia-You can create an especially revealing self-portrait by adding personal memorabilia surrounding your mirrored image, such as photos of yourself at various stages of your life, or anything that tells the viewer about your interests.

What I like about this picture is that you automatically know who this person is and where they work at. I chose this picture because I have seen pharmacists many times in my life and that white coat and clipboard always remind me of when I'm sick.

What I like about this picture is that it shows a typical teacher here in the United States.I have had teachers like this every year of middle school and high school.I chose this picture because I can compare to it since I see a teacher like this every week day.
What I like about this picture is that this guy added his own humor to the picture.I chose this picture because it immediately got my attention because of the superman logo and how it stood out form the black and white picture.

What I like about this photo is that it is very creative and is something very different you dont see every day.I chose this photo because it is a very cool picture and I really like his idea.

What I like about this photo is that it shows how happy the person is.I chose it because the guy looks very unique and his teeth got my attention.

What I like about this photo is that the football player looks ready to play.I chose it because I am a big fan of NFL football.

I will shoot pictures of my friend.I will shoot  at outside of his house during the daytime to have enough lighting.I will follow the rules of photography to make my shots successful.

American Soldier Slide Show and Captions

A. What is the most powerful image from the slideshows? Why? Picture number 5,because it shows how both of them are sad that Ian is leaving.
B. Through the photos, Ian is in different locations, each set of photos from the same location comprise a short series or set.

Set #1 At home in Denver - Tell me which image #s from image #1 to image #?? 1-9
Set #2 At Basic Training - tell me which image #s from image #?? to image #?? 10-30
Set #3 In Iraq - tell me which image #'s from image #?? to image #?? 51-70
Set #4 Back in Denver - tell me which image #s from image#?? to image #?? 71-83

Which set of images was the most powerful? Why? I think the Basic Training pictures were the most powerful because it shows how much people struggle there and the kinds of things they have to go through.
c. How do the images work together to tell a story? They work together because they are in chronological order so you can see what happens after one thing happens.

3. Underneath each photo is the caption that ran in the Denver Post
A. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written? They are all in present tense.

B. How do the captions enhance the photographs? They enhance the photographs because they explain what Ian is doing or feeling at that point in time.
4. Now its your turn to write a few captions -

Photo: 76-Ian's friends and family wait for him at Fort Sumter as he gets back from training.
Photo: 59-Ian and Private Brian get ready for Christmas as they hang some lights in their lobby.
Photo:57-Ian feels he can perform a lot better if he works out for a while every once in a while during his free time.

A. How do these other features enhance the photographs? These features add emotion and effect to the pictures.
B. In what ways are videos better than photographs? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site. Videos are better than photographs sometimes because they show everything that happened in the time period that you are filming, while when you take photos you miss many clips.
C. In what ways are photos better than videos? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site. You can draw many ideas and thoughts from a photo since you cant actually hear what the subjects are saying.

Aperture,Shutter Speed,ISO

 f/2.8 and f/16
f2.8 on left and f14 on right

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture? The background
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture, the greater the depth of field, the higher the Aperture the less the depth of field.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field? Aperture impacts the depth of field because it controls what you can and can't see in the background of the picture.
High Speed
Slow Speed

1. If you were assigned to shoot at Blue and Gold night, which was earlier this month, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:
At the beginning while the sun is still partially up and the courtyard has reasonable light
a.) the dunking booth=Fast Speed
b.) the food eating contest=Slow Speed
c.) the rock climbing wall=Slow Speed
d.) someone working at a booth=Slow Speed
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle=Slow Speed
f.) the Diamonds performance.=Fast Speed
Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.
a.) the dunking booth=Fast Speed
b.) the food eating contest=Slow Speed
c.) the rock climbing wall=Slow Speed
d.) someone working at a booth=Slow Speed
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle=Slow Speed
f.) the Diamonds performance.=Fast Speed
2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website. Explain how each works:

-Auto Mode-The Shutter and Aperture are chosen by the camera
-Aperture Priority Mode- You set the lens aperture while the camera does the shutter speed.
-Shutter Priority Mode-You set the shutter speed while the camera does the aperture.

 ISO 200
ISO 6400

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game? A higher ISO is needed when there isn't enough light or when you are trying to get fast moving pictures so its better for basketball and in night games.

2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?  He said you should always have your camera at the lowest ISO so you can get the best quality and to always use it when you have good lighting.

3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?  He said you should have a high ISO when there isn't enough lighting or when you need to take a fast moving shot.

SIM CAM:
F2.8 - Looks the best at 1/125th of a second
F4:Looks the best at 1/125th of a second
F5.6:Looks the best at 1/60th of a second
F8:Looks the best at 1/30th of a second
F11:Looks the best at 1/30th of a second
F16:Looks the best at 1/15th of a second
F22:Looks the best at 1/8th of a second

F2.8 there is no background visible - it is very blurry and all you can really see is the couple.
F4:You can barely see the couple, mostly all white.
F5.6: You can barely see their faces and you can now see color of the guys sweater.
F8: Still to much white but you can now see their faces and what they are doing.
F11:Most of the white outside is now gone.
F16:All of the white on outside is now gone.
F22:You can see everything good but picture is still a little blurry/shaken.

What is happening to the people themselves at slow Shutter Speeds? The photo becomes blurry/shaken.
What could the photographer do to help combat this problem? He could put the F-stop higher.
What is the lowest Shutter Speed do you think a photographer can hand-hold the camera? 1/60 sec.

How well did you do?  I did really well on the depth of field one and did ok on the other one.
Do you understand Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO better now? Yeah I didn't really know what ISO was until I read the article on it.

Abandoned Theme Parks

1. Tell me which amusement park featured in the two articles that you would like to visit and take your camera along and what about that park made you want to go there. Write at least a paragraph.
-Prypiat, Ukraine because it has that creepy feel to it since I saw the movie Chernobyl Diaries where people were affected by the radioactivity of reactor four.I can visualize this place being a scene in a movie because of the creepy vibe.I also find it crazy how a place like this is full of people 1 day and then a week later the whole area is deserted.

2. Post one photo from that park. You may use the photos from the link, or you can google an entirely new photo. I would prefer to see a photo of the park in disrepair and not a photo of it when it was still operating.

3. Think of at least FIVE other unusual places you think would be of interest to photographers. List them.
-Old Prisons
-Train Stations/Subway
-Old Hotel
-Abandoned town
-Junkyard

4. Use google or another search engine to research ONE of your five places and see if anyone has already started documenting that place. If you find that someone has already started - post at least one photo of their work.

5. Write a paragraph about why you think that it would be fun to document that location. Tell me what interests you about that place and what kind of photos you could expect to take there.
I think it would be cool to take pictures at old train stations and subways because I think there is a lot of history there and historic people that were in the same area. I would expect to take uncolorful photos there since its old.I could also take pictures of posters and signs to see what was happening at that point in time until it was closed.

6. Tell me what it would take for you to go and take photos at your location. What would you need as far as equipment goes, travel plans, expenses you might encounter and what laws you would have to take into consideration to take photos at your spot. I would need a good camera and would need to travel to an area with an old train station that is available to the public to go and take pictures. The expenses would be the gas or plane ticket to get there and then a hotel/food. There might be a law there were your not supposed to touch anything in the building, only looking.

Funny Captions

This is a sign located on the road towards Whitetown,Montana. I don't find it useful unless they put it about 170 KM farther up the road.

This picture was taken in Saleem,India at a railroad track. What's the point of buying a ticket to board when you can get a free ride like these guys?

This picture was taken in Baltimore,Maryland in a heavily populated tree area. The sign would of saved this guy if he didn't park in the opposite direction but I guess he will find out when he comes back.

Great Black and White Photographers PART 3

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them? The first thing that caught my eye on the photos were the point of view that the photos had. The reason I chose the Toledo photo is because we had studied it in my Spanish class.
2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time in the assignment Great Black and White Photographers Part 2. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. Answer them on your blog.
Tank Photo:
I see a tank, and many people beside it down a long road.I also see many buildings.
I smell the exhaust of the tank
I hear the tank's engine and the people yelling.
I taste the buttered toast I ate 10 minutes before for breakfast.
I feel the wind and the people pushing.

Toledo Photo:

I see a dog looking out into the city. I also see the river and it's water. You can't miss  the city of Toledo.
I smell the food from the merchants shops.I also smell the river water.
I hear the people working and moving. Also the animals following their owners.
I taste the fresh spring water I was drinking.
I feel the heat from the sun.I also feel the moist air because of the river.

I would like to create a powerpoint because I know powerpoint pretty well.

Academic Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you? Challenges that I encountered were finding classrooms that were actually doing something somewhat interesting and finding classrooms that weren't empty.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. I found myself thinking about the focus the how zoomed in I was because the last time that I took photos many of my photos came out blurry.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography? I would take a few more seconds getting my shot ready.

4. What things would you do the same? I would probably go to the same type of classrooms that I went to and the style that I took.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve? I think the easiest rule to achieve for my would be rule of thirds.

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture? Framing is the hardest picture to get and for it to be interesting.

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is? I am clear on all the rules.

Africa and Mural Project

This powerpoint was very interesting because it shows many kinds of the animals in Africa and how they interact. I am always interested in how everything works there such as which animals hang around with the others.

Favorite Photo:

3. Describe it and tell me why its your favorite: This photo shows many zebras and maybe some other animals that are crossing a river.I think it is my favorite because I have never seen this many zebras together at once.

4. What rules of photography are evident in the photos you selected, be sure to explain the rule to me? I think Rule of Thirds was applied here.
4. Look up the photographer on Google –
a.     What kind of camera did he use? He uses a high end camera with Nikon lenses.
b.     What is his reason for taking the photos? He is also into art/painting so he thinks photography is an art.
c.     What is his hope by taking these types of photos? He wants people to see the animals from Africa before they fall into the hands of man.
d.     Find something he has to say about Africa and post the quote on your blog. "You wouldn't take a portrait of a human being from a hundred feet away and expect to capture their spirit; you'd move in close"

Murals

1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a series of these panels to place around the school? We would probably have a "think about your future" theme to encourage kids to do better in school.
2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones? They should open it up for everyone.
3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus? We could probably put the mural near where the bus loop is so they can see it every day for the people that ride the bus which is most people here at school.

Academic Shoot 4-6

Lines-This is lines because the desks where the computers are create rows and the desks have straight lines...

1. How well did you follow the rule? Very well
2. What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject of this picture are all the people on computers and the straight edge tables
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? Somewhat

Rule of Thirds-This is rule of thirds because the subject of the photo is where the right cross lines meet up.

1. How well did you follow the rule? Decently
2. What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject is the girl in the library doing homework/studying.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?Yes
4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently? I could of moved my camera a little more to the left so that the subject was more to the right.

Simplicity-This is simplicity because the picture only has a person and their work with the background being very simple.

1. How well did you follow the rule? Very Well
2. What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject is a guy doing his work outside of his classroom.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? Yes because there is nothing else that can get your attention.

Academic Shoot 1-3

Mergers-This is a merger because there is one person in front of the other covering up some of his body.

1. How well did you follow the rule? I think I followed It well because it is supposed to be a merger and it has one person in front of the other.
2. What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject is two guys playing basketball in P.E. class.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? Yes it is very clear.

Framing-This is framing because the window is used as a frame to the inside of the classroom.

1. How well did you follow the rule? Well because I used the window of a classroom to to frame what was inside.
2. What is the subject (be very very specific)? Empty classroom in the STEM building.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is? Yes because it is a very simple picture.
4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?I would of preferred to have some students in the classroom but most of them had their lights off or curtains closed.

Balance-This is balance because both of them are about equal amount away from the edge of the photo and nothing takes away from the other.

1. How well did you follow the rule? I think I followed this picture about 75% of the way.
2. What is the subject (be very very specific)? The subject is the two guys on computers at the library.
3. Is it clear to people looking at your photos what the subject is?Yes because there are only two subjects in the picture that stand out.
4. If you didn't follow the rule well, what could you have done differently?  I would of rather have the guy in the black sit about one sit to the left.

Academic Shoot Preview

The Story:
This photo visually tells a story because you can imagine what these two guys have done while they have been out there helping out.You can also imagine what they did to prepare to build these houses such as them having to go through training.

Action and Emotion:
This photo shows to what seems like two students and their cool teacher. The student is playing around with the teacher with all three of them smiling. The emotion behind this photo is that they all like being their and they get along very well.

Filling The Frame:
The frame of this photo is filled because you see something everywhere including the darkness in the background because it adds to the effect of the photo. This photo wasn't named illumination for no reason because the light really flashes out at you and reaches the people in the photo as well.

Favorite Photo:
My favorite photo is the one where is shows a student in his junior year reading and studying of only SAT and ACT books since you take those tests your junior year.
1. Why did you pick this photo?I chose this photo because I can relate to it a lot since I am a junior this year and I have to study to get a good score.
2. What rules of photography are evident in the photo? The rule of thirds and balance are evident in this photo.

1. Where do you think you could take photos like the ones you look at today? I think I can take photos like the ones I looked at here at school, you just have to be there at the right time.
2. Whose classroom would you like to visit and take photos in? I would like to visit  classrooms with cool teachers.
3. What will you do, as the photographer, to get amazing photos like you look at today? I will try to get people while they don't know they are getting taken a picture of so it can look/be more natural.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos of your first 3 prompts (Red, Metal, Happy) A challenge I encountered while trying to get photo of my first 3 prompts was finding an area with good lighting inside of the building.Another challenge was finding things that I liked.
2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. I found myself thinking about the lighting and the focus that the photo had when I was out shooting. An example was that I tried to find the best areas with good lighting and I would take a while to try to get good focus.
3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography? I would take the rule of thirds into strong consideration as well as not merging photos.
4. What things would you do the same? I would get good lighting and have balanced photos because I thought I did that pretty good.
5. Finally - go back and edit your blogs with the 3 photos (red, metal, happy), tell me what rules of composition (which you just learned about) did you end up actually achieving? Did you have any?
In one of my pictures I had many lines and bright lighting so It makes your eyes right to it.In the other I had dark lighting closer to the viewer and bright lighting farther away(outside).

6. Are you interested in shooting those prompts again, why? I am interested in shooting some more prompts because Its like going on a scavenger hunt but taking the photo of that item and you use all of the knowledge that we recently learned.

Avoiding Mergers

This picture has many mergers in it.The blue car is behind the ambulance, the ambulance is behind the bicycle and the soldier is in front of the blue car.Not one thing is complete in this photo. It makes us(the viewer) not able to focus on anything.

Framing

I chose this photo for framing because the window is framing the American flag and the destroyed building. The window is also broken which adds to the effect.

Balance

This photographer made sure that nothing got more attention than the next thing. Both firemen are at about the center of the picture and they are both looking in the same direction. This creates the image on how everybody worked together that day/week.

Lines

These huge New York City buildings are very tall and wide so they have a lot of stories. All these lines in all the building including the one that is destroyed get your attention and make you think about how easily these buildings can get destroyed.

The Rule Of Thirds

In this photo the photographer used rule of thirds so that right when you look at this picture all of your attention goes to the car being thrown in the metal crate because it was destroyed. The yellow crate also can get your attention which leads your eyes up to the car.

Simplicity

I chose this photo for simplicity because it shows an American flag which can be seen almost anywhere here in the United States. Any government you see will have a US flag on a pole flying high.
